Urgent Need for Mobile Signal along the Inland Road, SH70
0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,500!
The Inland Road (Route 70) is currently the only accessible road into and out of Kaikoura that is open 24 hours and has been since the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck in November 2016. This road is used by residents, tourists, businesses servicing & working in the town and most importantly emergency services. For 32 km of this road there is NO cell phone reception what so ever.
We were informed that the Inland Road is not eligible for the government funded mobile & broadband investment programme to improve coverage in rural and remote areas. This is because one it is not a state highway even though it has been acting as one and will continue to do so for probably another 12 months and two we are not a designated tourist area??
However recently it has come to light that 520 new cell sites are being proposed by the rural connectivity group (an initiative by Vodafone, Spark & 2 degrees) sites have been put forward and we are on the list! BUT we need to get to the top of that list. Please show your support by signing this petition. Thank you
