Simon Oliver started this petition to MP Justin Madders and

Horizon Cremation is proposing to develop a crematorium on Green Belt land along the north side of Hooton Road in Cheshire. A related planning application is due to be considered by the Cheshire West and Chester Council imminently.

Horizon Cremation is run by a consortium of venture capitalists who profiteer from death.  Their business model is to find green belt land around the UK that is suitable for their brand and build new crematoriums on these sites.  They currently have 2 functioning crematoriums in Scotland and Staffordshire, another that is being built near Edinburgh, and have applications pending in Oxted and Hooton.

UK planning law clearly stipulates that green belt land has presumptive protection and  that developers must prove that there is an essential need to overturn this presumption.  By Horizon's own admission the Hooton catchment area has 330,000 residents.  This population is currently being served by 3 crematoriums (Blacon, Landicon and Flintshire).  Since government guidelines suggest that one crematorium should serve a catchment of 150,000 people, the Hooton catchment currently has provision for 450,000 people which is 120,000 more than the number of residents that live in the area.

The crematorium will cause congestion by introducing up to 200 cars every hour, all day, every day, to a very peaceful part of our countryside for decades to come.  This will cause considerable disruption and introduce air and noise pollution that will affect local residents and wildlife, and present increased traffic accident risks.  It will also be built on/immediately adjacent to a high flood risk area (UK Gov 2021).  Compacting the site’s land to build a car park and chapel facility will cause runoff that risks significantly exacerbating this flood risk.

We urge you to STAND WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY and OPPOSE the proposed Horizon crematorium development because:

  • There is no need for the facility
  • It will be built on Green Belt land that should be protected under UK planning law
  • Traffic congestion will cause considerable disruption to residents and wildlife
  • It will present a high flood risk
