New York’s Assembly bill 4628 for open captions is continuing to gain cosponsors. Say hello to new cosponsor Karines Reyes, who hails from the Bronx! Want to thank her? Send an email to her at reyesk@nyassembly.gov.
California open caption advocates WANT their own bill to protect and expand open captions in California but need your help, especially if you are a Californian. California open caption advocates in Caption Action 3 are trying to get an Assembly member or Senator to introduce a bill for open captions in California. California NEEDS a bill. People from all over California have signed the Caption Action 3 petition; the only California counties that do not have Caption Action 3 petition signatures are eight small (less than 30,000 people) counties out of 58 total: Alpine, Del Norte, Glenn, Inyo, Mariposa, Mono, Sierra, and Trinity.
Why a Bill for Open Captions in California?
California has an estimated 70+ theaters offering open captions regularly, but there's another 300+ theaters that do not. So, a bill would legally protect those open caption screenings, and have requirements and criteria similar to those of the New York and Washington state bills for open captions.
Are You a Californian?
Great! If you know who your Assembly Member is: go to the Assembly Member page at https://www.assembly.ca.gov/assemblymembers find your Assembly Member’s listing, and then select the link “Contact Assembly Member [Your Assembly Member’s Name].” The listing also has phone numbers. Ask your Assembly Member to introduce an Assembly bill for open captions in California. If you know who your Senator is: go to the Senators page at https://www.senate.ca.gov/senators find your Senator’s listing, and then select the Tab “Contact.” Ask your Senator to introduce a Senate bill for open captions in California.
If you do not know who your Assembly Member and/or Senator is, go to “Find Your California Representatives” at https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/ Enter your address and click “Find.”
Not a Californian?
California is such a big state that many of you have family or friends living in California. Tell them it is time for California to have a bill for open captions and urge them to contact their legislators to request such a bill. One point to make is that when you visit your California family or friends, you want to be able to go to the movies with them.
