August 13, 2021. Remember that date. It will be the date that history has been made – the release of the first “mainstream” deaf-centered movie with 100% open captions (subtitles). If you haven’t already heard, the movie is “CODA.” (CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adult(s)).
An award-winning film that swept Sundance, CODA is streaming on AppleTV+ and will be exhibited in a few select theaters. Only approximately 40 theaters nationwide will have CODA. Some will have it for only a few days.
Why is CODA important enough to send out this update? The fact CODA is going to show in real movie theaters means that for many people, seeing CODA in a theater will be their first time being exposed to deafness AND/OR open captions. Every screening of CODA will be open captioned.
How good is CODA? At the Sundance film festival, CODA got four awards:
- · Special jury prize for best ensemble
- · Directing Award
- · Audience Award
- · Grand Jury Prize
More recently, CODA won the London Award at the British Independent Film Awards' Sundance Film Festival.
A running list of theaters known to be offering CODA is posted here: facebook.com/ocmoviesnow.(currently pinned post).
Colorado OC Movie Programs Update
Reminder: The Colorado open caption trials are still going! Colorado Regals are also taking Upon Requests with 72 hrs advance notice with no minimum attendees required. Find out about Regal's Upon Request and Participating theaters: https://tinyurl.com/COMovieTheatersWithOCPrograms
It is important to continue OC requests because it proves the need for OC statewide in Colorado and the scheduled showtimes do not always meet people’s schedules.
