The Issue

Check out my website for my Proposal Growing up in Pearland, TX, I experienced firsthand the challenges of wanting to explore, visit friends, or simply get a snack without a car or driver’s license. The absence of sidewalks and bike lanes made it feel like the city was not designed for people like me—kids eager to ride their bikes to the park or walk to nearby destinations. This personal experience has fueled my passion for change, and I am determined to ensure that the next generation does not face the same obstacles.

In Pearland, two major thoroughfares, Broadway and Pearland Parkway, remain largely inaccessible for pedestrians and cyclists. The lack of infrastructure not only limits mobility and independence for young people but also poses significant safety risks. Pedestrians and cyclists are forced to navigate busy roads shared with vehicles, increasing the potential for accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes in 2020 in the United States increased 3.9% over the previous year, emphasizing the need for safer pathways.

By building sidewalks and dedicated bike lanes along these routes, we can transform Pearland into a more inclusive and safer city for all its residents. Creating these pathways would encourage healthier lifestyles, reduce vehicular traffic and emissions, and foster a stronger sense of community.

The City of Pearland has an opportunity to lead by example, showing its commitment to sustainability and community health. By investing in pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, we not only enhance safety but also improve quality of life for current and future residents. With widespread community support, we can create a roadway system that respects and accommodates all forms of transport.

I urge the local government, city planners, and fellow residents to prioritize this crucial development. It’s time for Pearland to evolve into a city that embraces its youth and supports its residents' desire for safe and accessible transportation options.

Join me in calling on the Pearland City Council to install sidewalks and bike lanes along Broadway and Pearland Parkway. Sign this petition and help make Pearland a better, safer city for everyone.
