Proposal: Relocate the Kellam High School Bus Stop from Ashville Park Blvd / Grandview Dr. to the Covered Gazebo off Batten Arch (just a few hundred feet away).   This affects our current and future Kellam children!

Every morning, Kellam High School students walk alone in the dark to a bus stop on a main road adjacent to a public parking lot — an area with poor lighting, low visibility, and regular traffic from vehicles outside the neighborhood.  This is not a safe place for children to wait unattended.

Moving the stop just a few hundred feet inside the neighborhood, to the covered gazebo off Batten Arch, would place students in a well-lit, highly visible sheltered area within the community.  The route adjustment adds approximately 30 seconds to the bus's schedule — a negligible trade-off, particularly given that this bus arrives at Kellam well before the school opens.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has established that well-lit, secure waiting areas meaningfully reduce risk for children and pedestrians.  This relocation aligns with those safety standards and reflects what any neighborhood should expect for its kids.

This ask is straightforward and can easily implemented. We urge Virginia Beach city officials and the school district to act now.
