The Issue

The safety of our students and their families must be the primary concern when choosing a venue for a youth sporting event. As the parent of a high school wrestler, I am deeply concerned about the current location of the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) High School State Wrestling Tournament being held in Portland.

Portland, while a vibrant and bustling city, has been facing significant challenges related to public safety. According to city crime statistics, there has been an increase in incidents that pose a risk to public safety, especially for out-of-town visitors unfamiliar with the area. Reports from various local news outlets indicate a rise in crime rates, including thefts and assaults. These conditions create an unpredictable environment that is not ideal for a youth sports event attended by families and school communities from across the state.

Moreover, the logistical complications of traveling to Portland amid these safety concerns cannot be ignored. Families are hesitant about attending due to these risks, leading to reduced support for participants and adverse impacts on the tournament’s attendance and success. Every year there are confirmed reports of multiple burglaries and vehicle break-ins to those attending the event.  It is vital that OSAA prioritize the wellbeing of the students, families, and supporters by opting for a location that provides a more secure location.

We propose that the tournament be relocated to a city with proven effective public safety measures and lower crime statistics. Cities such as Eugene, Salem, Corvallis or Redmond could offer ideal alternatives, providing safer environments that ease the concerns of parents, coaches, and schools, while still offering the necessary facilities to host a state-level wrestling event.

By signing this petition, you will urge the OSAA to reconsider the current venue for the High School State Wrestling Tournament and choose a location that ensures the safety and security of all attendees. Your support impacts not only the direct participants of these events but the wider community advocating for safer environments for youth sporting events. Please join us in this call for action by signing the petition today.
