Superintendent Lillian Maldonado French OF THE MVSD STATED FALSE FACTS IN A RECENT NEWS ARTICLE IN THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY TRIBUNE, “Children do not have a longer trek, thanks to the way the district did its reconfiguration.“ REPORTS AND DATA FROM THE COMMUNITIES DIRECTLY AFFECTED HAVE SHOWN THAT IT IS A LONGER TREK UP TO 20MINS LONGER IN SOME CASES.
They also stated that no one has a problem with this change, and that they have not heard any complaints about this change. In their own words “...There’s always going to be the one or two that aren’t happy, or the three or four, you know, the batch..” Recent data and community engagement research efforts have shown this statement to be false. In fact, more than half of the community was unaware of the closures and unaware that students were being displaced from their home schools.
THE COMMUNITY FEELS AS IF THEY HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT, THEIR VOICES WERE SILENCED DURING THE PANDEMIC, AND LOCKDOWNS.
LIMITED IN RESOURCES, PROPER EDUCATIONAL GUIDANCE, AND TOOLS ON HOW TO NAVIGATE THE “MVSD VIRTUAL BOARD MEETING” OR SITE. PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE DEMANDING THAT PROPER TOOLS, EDUCATIONAL, AND INSTRUCTIONAL GUIDANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE MEETINGS BE PROVIDED. ALONG WITH THE OPTION OF IN PERSON SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS.
THEY WOULD ALSO LIKE A FAIR VOTNG PROCESS, WITH THE OPTION OF IN PERSON VOTING, IN ADDITION TO A VIRTUAL VOTE.
WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THE GENTRIFICATION AND EXPLOITATION OF OUR COMMUNITY.
Data suggests that school closures do not simply alter the educational landscape, school closures are also emblematic of a larger spatial and racial reimagining of U.S. cities that dispossess and displaces communities of color.
We live in a democracy, in order to uphold and live by our founding principles a FAIR VOTE is necessary.
In addition to this, we feel as if some CIVIL RIGHTS ACTS have been violated.
THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE IN OUR COMMUNITY.
WE CAN DEFEND OUR COMMUNITIES AND GIVE A VOICE TO THOSE WHO CANNOT DEFEND THEMSELVES.
THE KIDS OF OUR COMMUNITY ARE THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY. LETS GIVE THEM A FIGHTING CHANCE.
THEY ARE OUR FUTURE LEADERS. THEY HAVE MUCH TO GIVE THIS COMMUNITY.
