Why this petition matters

Started by Arav Ginde

As many of you would have noticed, there is a plan to reconstruct a portion of the Americana Apartments to expand to more apartment units. And as part of the plan, the city council is approving removal of the pond- a habitat for birds in the vicinity that have been calling it a home for several years now. There is also a plan to cut 50+ year old heritage trees to make way for new constructions. The construction project that is currently underway calls to remove the entire pond and remove several heritage trees that have been around for years now. This is one of the only locations in the city that has a water body that can support so many organisms like catfish, ducks, geese, cranes, etc. Over a hundred birds every year migrate to the pond to breed and rest. Just this spring, over 30 eggs were laid at the pond and attracted hundreds of visitors to the pond to observe the newly hatched ducks and geese. Even more birds call the pond their home and rely on it for food and water. Trees that surround the pond also create homes for bird species such as Herons, that like nesting above water areas and help sustain the environment. In today’s world especially, we cannot afford to keep removing ecosystems and habitats that so many animals call home, in favor of economic gain. Sign the petition, to preserve a habitat and support a cause that will break the trend of exploiting nature for mankind’s benefit. We want to preserve the pond to protect the bird species that cannot speak up for their homes being destroyed and protect the natural beauty that this apartment complex has. Together, we can send this petition to Mountain View City Council to demand change!
