Revocation of sponsorship of YouTube Natural Hair "Guru" Taren Guy

Black women in this country are a unique group, in that we not only have to fight against stereotypes for being a woman, we also have to fight against stereotypes for being black. Black women, for ages, have also steadfastly stood in solidarity against those who seek to quiet our voices.

However, there are some black women among us who embody the very stereotypes we seek to decry, not realizing their actions undo much of the work many black women put into making sure our voices are heard loud and clear. The actions of some of these women are not only harmful to themselves, but to black women collectively.

One of those black women is Taren Guy, a Youtube Natural Hair "Guru". Taren has made known via her Youtube Videos, that she allows herself to be transparent in order to be more relatable to her viewers, many of whom are at an impressionable age and seek black women like her for empowerment, self love, self acceptance, self esteem, and self worth. However, it is dangerous to sponsor black women like Taren due to the fact that she represents the very stereotypes against which she speaks.

She has built her "brand" around natural hair care, self love, self acceptance, and women's empowerment. However, Taren is now pregnant again, for the 4th time out of wedlock, by a man who also happens to still be legally married. Taren is a misrepresentation to black women everywhere.

As a result of her misrepresenting what women's empowerment is about, she does not deserve the privilege of sponsorship from Motions Hair Care and its parent company, Unilever. Please reconsider your decision to continue to sponsor Taren as I do not want my daughters looking up to someone like her, who continues to damage the core and the fiber of what it means to be a black woman in this country.

Thank you for your time.
