Mortgages for those who pay rent

Mortgages for those who pay rent
Like many my circumstances have meant that I have not been able to get a mortgage. I split from my husband 4 years ago and was left having to rent a property for the first time since I was 19, I am now 50. Previously my mortgage was for £800 a month for a 3 bed detached bungalow. My rent is £975 a month now for a 2 bedroom maisonette. I have never defaulted in a payment so why is it deemed that I can’t be put forward for a mortgage when technically I am paying more than a monthly mortgage payment. My only downfall is not being able to obtain a deposit due to constant rises in inflation and the high rental costs. Many more people are in the same situations as me, wanting to own their homes but not much help for people of my age or in a similar situation. I’d love for this to be reviewed and for people like me through no fault of their own being able to get back on the property ladder.
