The Issue

The CBC investigation on mortgage fraud that was aired on October 14, 2022, has shown how rampant mortgage fraud is within Canada. The real estate and mortgage industry is self-regulated in many parts of the country. Realtors and Mortgage Brokers that blatantly engage in fraudulent activity are rarely held accountable. Only 7 Ontario real estate agents/brokers have been disciplined in the last 5 years. This has contributed to an overheating housing market, pricing out many law-abiding Canadians from ever owning a home. By signing this petition, we will put pressure on the Federal and Provincial Governments to: 

  • Impose stricter penalties for mortgage fraud and misrepresentation,
  • Revoking licenses and criminally charging perpetrators, 
  • Requiring provinces and territories to require the real estate and mortgage industry to be regulated by an external entity rather than self-regulation, 
  • Performing under-cover stings by the real estate bodies and law enforcement to ensure compliance, 
  • Requiring CRA to provide notice of assessments, T4s, T4As, and T5s directly to lenders to prevent documents from being manipulated, and 
  • Establishing a national database for banks and lenders to document fraudulent activity detected and backlisted brokers.
