While discussing this petition with those defending the LDS Church on the issue of Bullying, the same theme comes up over and over again. They claim the LDS Church 'is not responsible' for the abuse of children that occurs at Church and its activities, and therefore need not play an effective role in preventing and addressing bullying. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are required to attend church regularly to be in good standing, to have a Temple recommend. They are also required to attend the Ward (congregation) assigned to them to maintain good standing, where you live determines who you must go to Church with. To do otherwise endangers the salvation of parents and their children, as taught by LDS Leaders and believed by the faithful followers. The opinions of those defending the church (which match church policy), combined with the requirements of church attendance is placing children in the real danger of reoccurring harm in the form of abuse by peers and is a formula for disaster. If church authorities will not govern misbehavior that happens during church events, then who? Defenders of the Church in this discussion say it is the victim's parents responsibility to take on the often aggressive parents of the bully to address their child's abuse. The Stop It Foundation suggests that such an approach may not be wise, and that an authority figure should be used in such a delicate and potentially volatile discussion. At this point we ask LDS Leaders directly if the LDS Church DOES or DOES NOT have a responsibility for the safety of children left in their supervision? If they say they DO NOT we ask them to offer parents an informed right of refusal by placing a copy of the sign above on their buildings. We believe LDS Leaders in time will "Choose the Right" with this choice that is being place before them, the truth has great power to persuade. Thanks for your support and prayers, The Stop It Foundation
