MANDATORY CONSENT/SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS TRAINING FOR STUDENTS

MANDATORY CONSENT/SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS TRAINING FOR STUDENTS
The Issue
Recently, Twitter was taken by storm locally with women and girls coming forward with their stories of sexual assault and harassment by many students of MVUSD. From Valley View, to Vista... every single high school has at least one horrendous story. It is alarming how common it is and how many boys are repeat offenders.
As a former MVUSD student, and Vista del Lago High School graduate, I NEVER received sexual assault prevention or consent training until my freshman year of college (in Massachusetts). At this point in many people's lives, we have already been assaulted. Having this training and/or class can help a lot of students understand and practice consensual sex as well as learning to protect others from sexual assault. Our health classes are oftentimes taught by very conservative people who tell us to abstain from sex and brush over consent, if at all.
I am calling on Erik Swanson (VdLHS Principal), Robert Kedziora (MVUSD Superintendent), and the California Department of Education to implement a mandatory, GRADUATION REQUIREMENT, consent and sexual assault prevention training for students across the district and hopefully even the state. It is ridiculous that schools can have expensive rallies, assemblies, and games, but have not implemented sexual assault prevention training to protect and educate the students in their schools and districts.
Furthermore, the training/class should provide reliable resources to people who are survivors of sexual assault.
This is a change that we ask to see implemented as soon as possible because the stories just keep repeating themselves and that is unacceptable. You are an education system that must now step up to educate.
Thank you.
