Improve safety along Newlands Road, Coburg North

As residents, we are advocating to improve the safety for everyone along Newlands Road, Coburg North.

Newlands Road stretches through a residential area into a busy industrial area. Surrounded by parkland, the residential area continues to grow and the number of pedestrians and cyclists has significantly increased, with families, children, senior citizens and cyclists making use of the road as part of their daily commute to and from work, school, shops and appointments. Vehicle traffic has likewise increased, including heavy vehicles, and will continue to do so as the industrial area expands.

As residents, we support changes that will increase safety and improve road culture, including:

  • a reduction of the speed limit to 40km/hr in the residential zone
  • a pedestrian crossing near the intersection with Mcmahons Rd
  • improved on-road cycling signage
  • additional on-road speed limit signage
  • improved / additional safety barriers
  • curfew / signage regarding engine break usage

A motion relating to the above was brought forward and approved by Moreland City Council on 14th November, 2018: Council Meeting Agenda PDF, Page 400, 3Mb

An initial report was delivered to Council on 13th February, 2019 with a decision deferred: Council Meeting Agenda PDF, Page 114, 1Mb

Council will make a decision on recommendations and actions at the Council Meeting in April, 2019 (TBC).

Please sign and share this petition to let Moreland City Council know that you support the above measures that will improve safety on Newlands Road.
