More Professional Women’s Sports in Pittsburgh!
The Issue
The Steelers have a sports bar in ~26 different countries.
The Pirates became the first MLB team to have an all-Black & Latino roster.
The Penguins team & management helped secure a US Olympic team win for the first time in over 50 years.
This city lives and breathes sports. Yet, we barely have any influence when it comes to professional women’s sports teams. Sure we have the Rivettes & the Passion, but that’s it.
If Pittsburgh wants to both hone and garner its essence of being an athletic powerhouse, we should strive to be part of the burgeoning field of modern women’s teams.
The WNBA (basketball), MLWB (baseball), PWHL (hockey), AUSL (softball), as well as either the MLV or PVF (volleyball) are ripe for new teams and opportunities.
Nearly all these leagues are blooming or in a renaissance and we’re leaving a multitude of revenue streams from merch alone just sitting there. We can do better.
Frankly, Pittsburgh truly is an outsized sports powerhouse. We have a bigger impact on national sports than most big cities. But to neglect women’s sports almost entirely hurts our standing.
Plus, even Philly is getting a WNBA team by 2030. Are we just gonna let them brush past us in this race?
