A Petition for Fair, Accessible, and Affordable Student Parking

📢 OUR PURPOSE

We, the students of Morgan State University, are coming together to address the ongoing parking challenges that affect students across our campus.

As students, we have a responsibility to attend classes, participate in academic activities, and make the most of our college experience. However, the lack of accessible student parking has created unnecessary stress, financial burdens, and difficulties for students who commute to campus every day.

Students are often forced to arrive on campus significantly earlier than their scheduled classes just to find a parking space. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the availability of parking for students compared to faculty and staff that half of the time isn’t even being used, as well as the enforcement of parking restrictions in areas where students may see unused spaces.

We understand that the university has a responsibility to accommodate faculty, staff, visitors, and students safely. However, we believe that students deserve a fair opportunity to access available parking without facing unnecessary financial penalties or the risk of having their vehicles towed. Which as a college student, on our own cannot financially keep up with the amount of tickets and towing fees given.

We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for fairness, accessibility, and meaningful change.

✊ WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR

Through this petition, we are respectfully requesting that Morgan State University:

1. Increase Student Parking Availability

Explore opportunities to create additional student parking spaces.
Consider expanding existing parking areas or establishing alternative parking arrangements.
Evaluate the current demand for student parking throughout the campus.
2. Provide Fair Access to Existing Parking

Review the current allocation of parking spaces between students, faculty, and staff.
Identify underutilized parking areas that could be made available to students.
Consider allowing students to use designated staff parking spaces during periods when they are not needed.
3. Review Parking Tickets and Towing Policies

Reevaluate the current parking fines and towing policies.
Consider more reasonable enforcement practices when parking shortages contribute to the problem.
Improve transparency regarding parking violations and the citation appeal process.
4. Establish a Student Parking Committee

Give students a direct voice in decisions regarding campus parking.
Create opportunities for students to communicate their concerns to university administrators.
Encourage collaboration between students, the Student Government Association, and the Parking & Transportation Department.
5. Develop a Long-Term Parking Solution

Establish a realistic plan to address the student parking shortage.
Communicate proposed improvements and expected timelines to the student body.
Provide regular updates on the university’s progress.

This petition is about more than just parking spaces. It is about the everyday experiences of students who are trying to pursue their education while dealing with challenges that could potentially be addressed through better planning and communication.

Whether you have arrived late to class because you could not find parking, received a parking citation, or spent unnecessary time searching for an available space, your experience matters.

By coming together as a student body, we can demonstrate the extent of these concerns and encourage university leadership to work toward practical solutions.

One student’s concern can be overlooked, but the collective voices of an entire student body deserve to be heard.

We are committed to advocating peacefully, respectfully, and constructively while holding meaningful discussions with university leadership.

We are asking the administration to listen to its students, acknowledge the challenges they face, and take measurable steps toward improving campus parking.
