Moravian College's President, Bryon Grigsby, came to Moravian Book Shop this week to meet with employees. He laid out the college's plan for the store, with a Barnes & Noble where our book section is; college apparel, Moravian crafts and textbooks in our current gift/candy/Christmas section; and a Sodexo cafe in one of the front windows. They will be renovating sections of the store between June and November, but the store will remain open during the process. He took (a few) questions, but had very little information. Despite his claim that Moravian College will be directing Barnes & Noble's actions, B&N had posted our jobs without his knowledge, and he did not know what positions they were hiring for, how many jobs there would be, or even the rate of pay of the positions. He did acknowledge this petition and he said its existence had made it worse for us, the workers. He said the petition was expediting the takeover (an unverifiable claim since, in the three weeks since the announcement, they had never given us even a rough timeline). And finally, at the end of the meeting, he told us our last day is June 9th. I don't know if there will be a happy ending for this petition, at this point I would suspect that there won't be. But I know I can speak for everyone at our little store when I say thank you. To all of our loyal customers over the years, it has been a distinct pleasure knowing you. To everyone around the world who has signed in solidarity upon hearing of our plight, we are deeply grateful for your support. In the coming weeks please come visit us to say hi and goodbye. And, please continue to share this petition and contact Bryon Grigsby to let him know what you think of his plan. Like Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over till it's over."
