Respect Canada's Indigenous people - Montreal Canadiens and NHL

The Issue

Over the past month, there has been the discovery of nearly 1000 unmarked graves of Indigenous people (mostly children) at residential schools across Canada. This horrifying past and history in Canada is something that is currently not talked about openly, and it needs to change - starting right now.

In a year of unprecedented discoveries, we are asking the Montreal Canadiens to respect the history and the terrible loss of our Indigenous people in Canada by holding a moment of silence, instead of singing the national anthem at all the home games in the Stanley Cup Final.  It is time to acknowledge our dark past, to work towards reconciliation, and to no longer turn a blind eye to pressing issues that require our attention.

** I am starting this petition to show support for our Indigenous communities across Canada, in order to continue to amplify their voices, and acknowledge that I still have a lot to learn. While I will may never be able to fully understand the magnitude of this devastating loss, I hope that this small step can help continue the conversation about Canada's dark past and encourage others to read, discuss, and challenge what has been covered up for so many years. **
