Mandatory Equity Training for ALL MCPS employees

Mandatory Equity Training for ALL MCPS employees
The Issue
In light of the recent events that have taking place in Minneapolis and South Georgia, the black community continues to suffer unjust loss of our black men and women. This is not just a national issue but an issue that impacts black children everywhere, who are our future. The Montgomery County Public Schools system, while diverse, has a strong black and brown student population consisting of 31% of our student population being Latino (Majority) and 22% of our student population being African American. The numbers amongst MCPS staff are alarming different. Nearly 60% of MCPS employees are white and only about 31% of MCPS employees are Black or Latino. The aftermath of the unjust killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery , and Breonna Taylor have resulted in protest and community outrage but more importantly, have left many parents and students at great loss. Many black parents are wondering; what do we tell our black sons and daughters? Many MCPS Principals and leaders have held voluntary conversations throughout the school system, but not all teachers and support staff attend. Why are these conversations optional in a time such a now? Making Equity training for ALL MCPS employees Mandatory with help MCPS staff to challenge biases, enhance cultural proficiency and repair trust between black children and white teachers, staff and administrators. By keeping Equity training optional, we cannot say we truly want our community to be better. It should be required that every MCPS employee, specifically teachers and front office staff, participate in at least 2-3 Equity trainings per school year. We can never stop learning and the time to heal the broken trust and tackle racism in America is now, starting with MCPS.
