Appeal the Approval of the 300 Cannery Row project in Monterey

The Issue

The 300 Cannery Row Project in Monterey has been approved despite the fact that it violates current planning rules for the location, potentially affecting all development in the City of Monterey.

These violations include population density rules (by allowing twice the maximum of 30 units per acre), the fact that residential units are not permitted on street level in this area (by creatively renaming of the basement to the first floor), and opens the possibility to increase the maximum building height (by measuring from the bottom of the second, not the first floor) not just on Cannery Row, but anywhere in the City of Monterey.

The New Monterey Neighborhood Association has sent an appeal to the City Council.

Support for this appeal will show that Monterey residents do not agree with this kind of 'funny business' which allows a single commercial project to ignore rules that are binding for everybody else.  And it will show that they are not prepared to take the first step onto a slippery slope that might change the face of the whole city, not just Cannery Row, down the line.
