Imagine having to pay about $11 per week just to be able to go to school, while others living in the same town are provided with a bus free of charge.

Imagine being marked as "tardy" for a bus being late or not showing up, even though you are not in control of that happening and just being told "take the earlier bus" (when there are none).

Imagine not knowing how you are going to get home on days with delayed opening schedules or abbreviated days because of the bus not reaching the highschool.

Imagine having to pay $10 out of your own pocket on an Uber in order to risk not being late to school because of the bus.

These are only some of the issues that students that live in the South End part of Montclair experience daily. We have to deal with paying for a bus that is not reliable, when that should be the responsibility of the school district.

Those who live in the Northern part of Montclair are provided with a bus to and from school daily, free of charge. When there is an abbreviated day or delayed opening, they do not have to worry about whether or not there will be a bus available for them. When the bus is late, they are excused while those who pay for the bus have to deal with the consequences of NJTransit and the Montclair Board of Education.

The minimum distance in order to qualify for busing is two miles, but South End stretches beyond that limit (like the distance from Nishuane Elementary School to Montclair High School is two miles, with most people living beyond that distance). If this is the case, why is there no busing being provided?

In addition, some of the students do not have the financial means to pay for busing daily. Although the high school offers $11 for a sheet of 10 tickets (enough to last the week), that is not a real discount and adds up quickly.

We are asking for the Montclair Board of Education to stop ignoring this issue that has been going on for years. I am a current senior and this problem has been here ever since I was a freshman- and beyond that as well. It is seen as "not important" or "minuscule" but it impacts us all. Imagine having to pay for a bus that is always late, makes us tardy, and does not even stop in front of the school on days with an abbreviated/delayed opening schedule all while there are others receiving one for free.

This problem needs to stop now, and it is up to the Board of Education to actually take the matter into their hands and change it.
