Prevent Montana's Wolf Massacre
Prevent Montana's Wolf Massacre
In yet another vicious attack on the country's recovering wolf populations, the state of Montana has authorised the night-hunting, baiting, and trapping of over 400 wolves. The approved methods of "harvesting" include using brutal neck snares and setting bait to draw in wolf packs. If this unnecessary attack on wolves is allowed to transpire, nearly half of the wolves in the state will be exterminated.
The year's hunt intends to leave at least 450 wolves dead. Over 40% of Montana's wolves will be destroyed in this season alone.
This devastating blow to Montana's wolves comes only weeks after the federal government's refusal to protect wolves under the Endangered Species Act. With the power to either protect or massacre wolves turned over to individual states, wolves have quickly become the targets of relentless trophy hunting that will leave hundreds dead by the end of this year. If American wolf populations are ever to truly recover, we must prevent these horrific mass killings from occurring.
By signing this petition, I call upon the Montana State Senate and the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission to heed the advice of Commissioner Pat Byorth and reverse the wolf harvesting package decision. This ecologically-unsound wolf massacre runs contrary to the ethics of the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks and actively disregards information gathered by conservational ecology groups. It's time to put an end to this senseless war on America's wolves.
