We reached 1000 signatures! Thank you to everyone who is getting the word out. Please continue to do so. Our goal is 5000 signatures.
We have a few updates on the process for you.
1) The proposal has been submitted by Stevensville High School to MHSA
2) Several schools are having active discussions. Communities across the state are engaging their school administrations. We have heard of these conversations being had in Miles City, Belgrade, Bozeman, Dillon, Twin Bridges, Frenchtown, Kalispell, Great Falls, Missoula and Florence to name a few.
3) The American Legion coaches are discussing and we have heard resoundingly positive feedback. We ALL want what is best for our kids.
For everyone not familiar with the process of adding an activity through MHSA, the process can be long. We believe this is a pretty accurate description of the process.
- The first step is the proposal to form a committee to study feasibility (done).
- Second is the MHSA staff and Executive Board reviews the proposal and decides if they will add it to the annual meeting agenda. A link to who serves in these roles can be found at the link. Do not hesitate to reach out and voice your support. https://www.mhsa.org/aboutus
- Step three is all of the Athletic Directors in the state will meet in virtually in January (date is to be determined) and discuss this proposal and other issues. All of the member schools will vote on the proposal. If it passes five (?) member school representatives will have to volunteer to do the study. We intent on sending this petition to the members for them to review as part of their consideration.
- Step four is a vote to implement. This usually occurs at the next annual meeting (January 2022). Then schools decide if they will adopt for the 2022-2023 school year.
It can be a long process so we all must remain diligent in our support. It is important to note that the MHSA membership has done this process faster in the past, so it is possible this could happen sooner.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
