On Tuesday July 26 at 7 p.m. in Bloomington, IN, the Monroe County Fair plans to host a "pig wrestling contest." In such contests, pigs made slippery with grease or cooking oil are chased around a ring by people attempting to throw them to the ground or into a barrel. The pig has no choice in participating in this form of "entertainment," and he or she is typically very frightened. Since the contestants are timed, they often use any means necessary, including dragging pigs by their limbs, tails or heads toward the goal location. Pigs are often seriously injured during this ordeal. Following the contest, they are loaded onto the same crowded trailer that brought them there and ultimately sent to a slaughterhouse.

Pig wrestling is a cruel, painful, frightening ordeal for pigs that conveys the message that it’s acceptable to harass, abuse and injure pigs for “entertainment.” It’s part of the overall message we hear about animals, that they are our property to be used as we please no matter how cruelly, and to be killed at a young age even though they want to live.
