Florida Keys Sewer Ratepayers started this petition to Florida Governor and

Grinder pumps are far more expensive to maintain than gravity sewer connections and this will cause increased rates for all customers. During a power outage there is a very high risk of sewage overflows and backups due to the very limited storage capacity of an individual pump station. It is inequitable and a personal affront to force some home owners to surrender property to site publicly-owned pump stations, and to force them to individually pay an electrical contractor to install the power source for publically-owned equipment. All pump stations of whatever size must be sited on public property and powered as part of the overall collection system construction. Where a grinder pump is the only sensible means of collecting wastewater, using one pump for several homes would greatly reduce the number of pumps to maintain as well as the cost of the system. The decision to use grinder pumps instead of gravity was made solely on economic considerations based on fabricated data and applying different standards of construction to each system.
