No cuts to Monash Counselling Staff!

This petition had 1,127 supporters

Monash Counselling staff are at risk of losing their jobs, and Monash Students at risk of losing important services, as the University moves to further corporatise health services.

In order to retain their jobs, current staff have to compete against each other in an application process where the 4 remaining positions at Clayton and Caulfield campuses will be picked from the pool of applicants. The rest will essentially lose their jobs!

The University Counselling Service provides free ongoing care and support for students and staff with mental illness.

They also provide free care for patients who are not diagnosed with a mental illness but require support for issues like:

·         sexual assault

·         coming out

·         grieving the death of a loved one

·         failing units

and range of other issues.

They assist students with extra services, including:

·         providing ongoing care with regular meetings

·         providing assistance and referrals to emergency ‘walk-ins’

·         providing students with letters to take into disciplinary and academic progress meetings with the University

·         collaborating with staff

-----------------------------------------------------------------

In defence of the cuts, the University says they will replace waged staff with contracted psychologists who are paid by appointment. They argue this is better for students because they see almost twice as many patients per day.

The idea is to churn through more students, but not provide the same level of care. They do not have the time for writing students letters to take into meetings, or providing students with the same level of ongoing care outside appointment hours. If a student misses an appointment they are charged a $50 fee.

The University also points to private psychologists who work at the University. They do not provide free counselling services. If someone is not diagnosed by a GP, but requires support for issues like sexual assault or assisting a suicidal friend, they will have to pay full fees upfront.

Don’t turn healthcare into a profit making industry!

Don’t force staff to compete for their jobs!

We, the undersigned, demand all psychologists and counselling staff employed by Monash University retain their positions.
