Stop Breed Discrimination NZ

The issue

Karma is a dog that was abandoned around 8 months ago in Pakuranga Auckland. She survived by eating garbage and sleeping in the bush along the river bank, she never bothered anyone but was scared of humans and remained on the move . She became pregnant and had puppies no doubt starved in the early days while the puppies were just born, At least now she remained in a smaller area so we could leave her food. She still wouldn't stay any where close enough to us for us to get her to the SPCA where we had arranged a shelter spot for her and her pups, She started barking people were scared and called animal management but she kept moving all of her 4 puppies to a new nest evading all of the somewhat feeble efforts of dog control. But 4 puppies soon became 1 puppy the moving them around was too hard they others lost, each time a puppy was lost she would howl all night and rush around frantically looking for it Karma had some happiness though as with food in her tummy we got glimpisines of her playing with her remaining puppy she was an excellent mum. Then tragedy today she is howling again the last puppy lost, across the river we hear dog crying noises so I drive around to the other side of the river but before I get out of my car there is Karma she had heard the noises too and had already swam the river at high tide its wide and she was trying to get over the fence to her puppy, it wasn't actually her puppy though. She stayed she would of stayed forever but finally animal management had her within easy reach, now she has less than 7 days to howl all night for her puppy before being destroyed  by animal management, and after all that they didn't even need a pole to put her on a lead, she is not even aggressive she just barked to defend her puppy and she just ran away because she was scared, we found out her name is Karma abandoned a year ago. Karma is a survivor and a dedicated loving mother dog, she will spend her last 7 days of life howling for her puppy and alone,

In response to animal management destruction of dog Karma based on their reasoning being that she did not pass the aggression test as stated by manager Tracey Moore

Firstly animal management did not aggression test Karma as I was advised of this by front desk Manukau Animal Shelter where Karma was impounded.* The reason stated was that Karma was of pit bull type appearance so would not be eligible for the aggression tested
Secondly if this dog karma was destroyed because she was of pitbull type appearance and therefore discriminated as aggressive without opportunity of test to prove this death sentence then why did Animal Management allow an aggressive dog to roam the streets and live in the bushes behind Riverhills Primary school for almost a year, They had so many opportunities to get Karma, for example Animal Management Officer Monica visibly sighted Karma after being directed to her in the bushes by myself. Monica took a look at Karma then turned to me and told me she would be back tomorrow to get her, she did not return the next day. Or the next day or the next......yes they made a show around a week later into a small area of bamboo and left again. Another week passed. Another officer came out on three occasions to various local addresses after 3 locals rang in concern about a dog roaming behind the school, He took a statement each time and left. One of those times he had to be almost dragged down to the area to show him where Karma was. The area Karma roamed in could have been covered in a few hours with a team of officers spread out. Karma was destroyed because of reason no reason surly but deemed to be aggressive as of pit bull type appearance but not necessary enough to get animal management out in force to remove this so called aggressive dog from roaming free behind a primary school for the last year!!!!
Its too late now for Karma but there are thousands of dogs killed at Manukau shelter every year*and many of those are killed without even the opportunity of an aggression test & subsequent adoption puppies as well. Why??? because they are deemed to be of pit bull type appearance. To kill an animal without even testing them to see if they are aggressive is cruel and unnecessary and is a knee jerk ineffective reaction to the problem of dog aggression. It is also a waste of the tax payers money as it does not bring down dog attacks Public safety is in fact compromised with resources put to destroying dogs who may or may not be dangerous with a hysteria response misconception that by killing out a particular breed ie the Pit bull, the problem will be solved, In the 1990's s it was the German Shepard*. The Doberman Pinschers and the Rottweilers are among other breeds to be blamed for what comes down to an issue of dog owner responsibility. What fatal attacks are proven to have in common is The Delise Criteria *...

• Dogs used for protection, guarding, fighting or kept as a resident dog, not a companion dog.
• Dog socialized and trained with abusive methods
• Dog is housed, fenced or chained 24/7
• Children unsupervised
• Domestic violence
• Loose roaming dogs
• Dogs not spayed or neutered.

Studies of pre- and post-breed-ban dog bite rates in the United Kingdom and Spain concluded that their breed-discriminatory laws had no effect whatsoever on reducing dog bites. Italy recently revoked its breed restrictions, stating that the ban had no scientific justification. Canada, has the lowest dog-bite rates in 25 years, without enacting breed discrimination.* Instead they focused on methods that actually worked by putting resources to dogs whose behavior is truly dangerous, preventing reckless or problem pet owners from having any dog, holding people responsible for the behavior of their pets regardless of breed or appearance, restricting tethering since tethered dogs are much more likely to bite, subsidizing neutering, educating children on how to behave around dogs & owners of the importance of supervision of dogs around children and leash law enforcement. Its time for NZ to follow overseas example and focus on what really does work to reduce dog attacks. The American Temperament Test shows pit bulls consistently score above the average for all breeds tested, year in and year out!* Every dog is an individual and should be judged on behavior, not appearance.

Please support this petition to government to stop destruction of dogs equal in value to any loved family pet killed because they are or even just because they look like a pit bull in type appearance.
