Hi all, you probably have heard about the project that has been taken over by the developer Prado Group at 3700 California Street. There will be a Planning Commission hearing on Thursday, May 1st to discuss proposed revisions. This revision includes a request to remove a majority 49 trees on the property. This includes eight trees which fall under the classification of "significant trees", at least four of which which are 6 story tall redwood trees. Prado has already won their bid to remove 200 - Yes that is not an exaggeration, you read it right, TWO HUNDRED trees- from 3333 California Street, a mere 5 blocks away. I'm including the 3700 California tree removal request with my post. Please know that developers are required by city law to replace any removed trees, so they are forced to do replacement. Their proposed replacement trees are non flowering olive trees, which are wispy trees with narrow trunks. The value of a tree lies in its trunk, that is where trees sequester CO2. When a developer removes large, healthy trees, they aren't doing any of us any favors by replacing them with wispy saplings. It will take at least 5 years for their proposed trees to come to maturity. San Francisco has the worst Urban Canopy of any major US city. That is not an exaggeration. Trees cannot speak for themselves. If you care about your Urban Canopy and wish to speak in defense of the trees, I suggest going to the meeting and speaking, or writing to the planning commission ASAP. You might even want to give them a call. Meeting details: Thursday, May 01, 2025 12:00 PM Location: Room 400, SF City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco If you're not able to make the hearing but would still like your voice to be heard, you can write to: commissions.secretary@sfgov.org In the subject line you can reference "for public comment 5/1, agenda item 12"
