The Issue

Every morning, as the sun rises over Tippecanoe County, parents, students, teachers,  bus drivers, county workers, and those that live in the area find themselves inching through the congested intersection at County Road 500N and County Road 50W. For me,  a community member, this daily struggle is more than just a frustration—it's a call to action. The lack of a protected green arrow for eastbound turns on County Road 500N northward not only increases the risk of accidents but also adds unnecessary delays to our day.

This intersection lies at the nucleus of our community’s daily routine. With multiple schools in the vicinity, mornings see a surge in traffic that our current infrastructure can't adequately handle. Students anxiously watch the clock as their buses are held up in traffic, causing delays to the start of their school day. Teachers and school staff, caught in the same bottleneck, are often racing against time to reach their classrooms and prepare for the day, striving to provide the education our children deserve.

Statistics show that the absence of protected turning phases at busy intersections can lead to increased accident rates. According to a study by the Federal Highway Administration, installing protected left-turn phases at intersections like ours can decrease collisions by up to 60%. Furthermore, smoother traffic flow reduces congestion, minimizes stress during commutes, and ensures a more predictable start to the school day for everyone involved.

Our community needs a comprehensive solution to address the congestion and safety risks at this intersection. We respectfully call upon the local government and the Tippecanoe County transportation department to reassess the signal timing and phase at this crucial intersection. Introducing a "protected" green arrow for eastbound turns onto County Road 50W heading north could significantly improve safety and efficiency for all of us.

By signing this petition, you're standing up for the safety and well-being of our community members. You're advocating for a change that can potentially save time, reduce accidents, and make our morning commutes more predictable. Join us in urging local authorities to implement this necessary change. Sign this petition and help usher in a safer, more efficient travel experience for everyone in Tippecanoe County.
