As the operator of a local animal sanctuary, my life's purpose is to provide nurture and shelter for animals in need. However, the current prohibitive local ordinance serves as a barrier to the important work of animal rescuers in our area. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter US animal shelters nationwide every year, clearly demonstrating a desperate need for as many safe havens as possible [source: ASPCA]. Although the ordinances were likely put in place to prevent potential nuisances, the actual outcome has been an unfortunate limitation on well-organized and responsible animal rescues in subdivisions. Therefore, we beseech local legislators to review, reconsider, and change the ordinance to allow pet shelters and sanctuaries to operate within residential subdivisions. This amendment will enhance our ability to help countless animals in need, providing them with the care, attention and love they so rightly deserve.
