Modify Divorce Laws Pertaining to Spousal Pensions and Inheritance

The Issue

It's a deeply personal journey that a friend of mine embarked on recently; she found herself standing outside the cold walls of a courthouse, shell-shocked. Like many, she was unprepared for the financial implications of divorce, especially as they related to spousal pensions and inheritance.

In the current system, spouses can often be left with little to no financial safety net after a divorce, particularly when it comes to pensions and inheritance. For instance, the National Women's Law Center reports that, on average, women's income fell by 41% following a divorce—almost double the loss men experience.

Family law is complex and varies greatly depending on the jurisdiction, but there is often a persistent imbalance, influenced by antiquated systems that do not fairly consider the joint contributions and sacrifices couples make for their mutual financial security. It's time to reassess these laws and ensure that they are updated for the realities of modern divorce.

Through this petition, we call upon the relevant lawmakers and policymakers to reassess and modify the laws related to spouses' rights to pensions and inheritance in the event of a divorce. The goal is not to usurp or undermine the sanctity of marriage, but to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of assets when a marriage ends.

Please sign this petition and join us in pushing for a change in divorce laws pertaining to spousal pensions and inheritance. It's time for fairer distribution, it's time for financial justice.
