I have always been passionate about providing the best possible skin care to my clients. However, under the current Pennsylvania cosmetology law, which dates back to May 3, 1933, we are facing extreme restrictions that hinder our ability to perform to the best of our abilities. Unlike neighboring states like New York and Maryland, estheticians in Pennsylvania are unable to conduct certain industry-standard protocols without incurring the exorbitant expense of hiring a "medical director." This outdated regulation not only limits our services but also causes us to lose clients to estheticians across state lines who can provide a broader range of treatments.

Michigan has successfully updated their licensing requirements to reflect modern practices, and it's time for Pennsylvania to follow suit. The current law does not encompass the full scope of what an esthetician's job entails, especially concerning work with the entire stratum corneum. This not only affects our livelihoods but also limits the quality and range of care we can provide to our clients.

Our proposal is straightforward and necessary: We are asking the Pennsylvania House and Senate to revise our archaic laws to include advanced modalities in our curriculum without the need to return to school. By extending the hours required for a license, we could adapt our training programs to incorporate these modern skills while also grandfathering in current licensed estheticians, ensuring no one is left behind.

The benefits of modernizing our licensure are clear. It would not only advance our profession but also enhance consumer safety by ensuring that these procedures are carried out by well-trained professionals rather than unlicensed individuals or those operating under less stringent standards.

It’s time to bring positive change to our field. Pennsylvania estheticians are simply seeking the ability to execute our job fully and effectively without unnecessary barriers. We urge the legislators to consider the dire need for this update, which will better align with the current industry standards and practices worldwide.
