I have some massive news for you! The MI Cottage Food Law just got a major "level up" in Michigan as of January 2026.
The rules have changed significantly (for the better). Here is the 2026 breakdown:
1. The Revenue Cap Just Doubled
The biggest change is the money.
Old Rule: You were capped at $25,000 in gross sales per year.
New: The cap has been raised to $50,000. If you sell a single unit for $250 or more (like a high-end wedding cake), your cap actually goes up to $75,000.
2. You Can Finally Sell Online
Until recently, you had to hand the food to the customer in person.
New: You can now take orders via your website, Etsy, or social media and ship them via mail or use 3rd-party delivery (like DoorDash).
3. Michigan now allows for a voluntary registration system. Instead of putting your home address on every cookie label for the world to see, you can use a registration number provided by the state.
Coming Soon! Register with the MSU Product Center for a unique ID number so you don't have to put your home address on your labels. You can find that registration portal here: MSU Product Center.
NO WHOLESALE
The law still says you cannot sell wholesale. This means you can't sell your cookies to a local coffee shop for them to sell to customers. It must be Direct-to-Consumer.

THIS IS AN AMAZING UPDATE! I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting our cause and taking the time to sign our petition over the last couple of years.
I am so incredibly proud of this community. When I started this petition, these changes felt like a distant dream, but your signatures made the difference. We are officially in a new era for Michigan home-based food businesses!
With so much gratitude,
