Modernize Kentucky’s cottage food laws
Modernize Kentucky’s cottage food laws
The Issue
I have lost numerous customers due to the strict Kentucky cottage food laws. As a dedicated home baker, I am passionate about sharing my creations with the community, but these outdated regulations make it difficult. I want to change this so that we can all benefit and grow as home bakers who are not yet in a position to afford a commercial kitchen.
Currently, the laws governing cottage food production in Kentucky are overly restrictive, limiting where and how we can sell our goods. This is not only hampering potential business growth but also stifling the local economy and reducing diversity in the food options available to Kentuckians. Many states have already modernized their cottage food laws to embrace an entrepreneurial spirit while ensuring health and safety. It's time for Kentucky to do the same.
The Kentucky Food Freedom Act could be a game-changer for small-scale food producers like myself. It would allow us to sell direct to consumers, including at farmers' markets and online, without excessive red tape. This change could significantly increase our customer base and allow us the opportunity to thrive as small business owners. Moreover, with the advancements in food safety and transparent labeling, we can ensure that consumer health is not compromised.
An updated law would not only empower home bakers but also foster a sense of community, encourage more local food production, and contribute to a sustainable and vibrant local economy. Home bakers could try new recipes, take customer feedback, and continuously improve their offerings, all while providing delightful, homemade options to our neighbors.
It's time for change. We ask lawmakers to support the Kentucky Food Freedom Act to help modernize our cottage food laws. Let’s encourage homegrown talent, support local businesses, and keep dollars within our community.
By signing this petition, you are standing with Kentucky’s home bakers and supporting a move towards a more inclusive, innovative, and dynamic food industry. We need your help to make this change a reality. Please sign and share this petition today to show your support for the Kentucky Food Freedom Act.
