“Modern Family” should have Dylan flunk out of nursing school or choose to leave because it is too difficult. Perhaps the school only admitted such an unqualified student because of a clerical error.

The December 4, 2013 episode of ABC's popular sitcom Modern Family revealed that Dylan, the sometime boyfriend of character Haley Dunphy, had begun attending nursing school. Because Dylan has always been a clueless dolt, his pursuit of nursing reinforces the stereotype that any well-meaning idiot can become a nurse. In fact, real nurses are college-educated science professionals. The stereotype that nurses are low-skilled dimwits undermines their claims to the respect and resources they need to save lives.
