Stop Mob Rule In Gurgaon

Stop Mob Rule In Gurgaon
The Issue
To.
The Chief Minister Of Haryana, India
Dear Sir,
We the people of Gurgaon are dismayed at the turn of events that led to communal violence in Nuh and its spread to neighbouring areas, especially Gurgaon. Different areas of Gurgaon witnessed horrific incidents with armed mobs indulging in violence with impunity, brazenly asking people’s religion, burning a mosque in sector 57, killing its naib Imam and vandalizing Muslim owned shops and eateries. Equally disturbing are reports of mobs attacking and issuing threats to poor Muslim migrant families to leave the city.
When a mob wins, everyone loses. Gurgaon is losing. It is losing its pride in being a cosmopolitan city as people are targeted and attacked for their religion and faith. It is losing its dignity, as its people weep and beg for protection. It is losing its claim as a compassionate city, as fear grips the people. It is losing its safety as schools are cancelled and offices closed and people cower in fear inside their homes
As citizens of Gurgaon, considered the corporate capital of North India, our heads hang in shame at the violence that has taken innocent lives, rendered poor people homeless, destroyed a place of worship and snatched away means of livelihood from people. We call upon all citizens of Gurgaon to reject mobs and the violence they espouse. Offer no sympathy to the mob’s cause and reject hate towards any religion or faith. These mobs are a blot on our country, our city and our democracy.
As citizens of Gurgaon -
- We demand that the Gurgaon police fulfill their duty of ensuring security for all citizens irrespective of their religion and denomination and restore peace.
- We demand that the Gurgaon administration and police bring the guilty to justice as soon as possible
- We demand that the police put an immediate end to the intimidation of Muslim migrants by mobs to leave the city
- We demand that the state address the suspicion of partisanship in law enforcement and instill confidence in people
- We demand that the fear and rumours sweeping across Gurgaon be addressed effectively by those responsible for governance with a zero tolerance policy towards hate speech
- We demand that the Gurgaon administration provide immediate relief and rehabilitation to those who have lost livelihoods and property
- We demand that protocols of accountability and security be put in place to prevent any future violence and to preserve the cosmopolitan social fabric of the city.
