The MLK Community is inviting all those in support of opening dialogue and maintaining middle school at MLK to attend the Tuesday, February 27th MNPS Board Meeting wearing MLK Royal Blue! The public MNPS Board Meetings take place at 5pm in the Board Room of the Central Office (2601 Bransford Ave).
Although it has been almost 3 months since the plan to eliminate 7th & 8th grade at MLK has been announced, there have not been any community meetings scheduled for stakeholders to share feedback. All questions/concerns sent to leaders at the Central Office and/or School Board members have gone unanswered. In the absence of any opportunity to have transparent conversations about the proposed changes to MLK, we feel that the next necessary step is to show-up at the Board of Education meeting in support of keeping middle school at MLK.
Please share this invitation with anyone else whom you feel may be interested in attending. We look forward to seeing students, alumni, faculty/staff, and all those who support maintaining middle school at MLK at the MNPS Board Meeting on Tuesday, February 27th @ 5pm!
The Tennessean published an article today with more information: https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/education/2024/02/26/mlk-jr-magnet-nashville-plan-remove-7-8-grade-spark-frustrations/72605655007/?fbclid=IwAR3fO9xDysWkAYjjYCj9chY5JsDI2iP8_oa0vKrCsCjfeO_qMqNygpe6Yhc
Please note some inaccuracies in the article:
1 - MLK's building capacity is 1500 students (not 1350 students)
2 - Although there is sometimes a short waiting list for rising 9th graders on selection day in early March, said waitlist is typically exhausted by April. This means that 100% of qualified 9th grade applicants have been offered a place at MLK for 5+ years. In contrast, MLK's middle school always has a long waiting list throughout the summer and into the start of school. Some years, the waiting list for 7th & 8th grade doesn't move at all. There is a high demand for middle school seats at MLK that the school cannot accommodate.
