PETITION TO SAVE THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI’S COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING LIBRARY
The Issue
The University of Missouri is full of rich history and great traditions, and the College of Engineering is no exception. Beginning in 1849, the College taught the first engineering course west of the Mississippi. In 1903, MU engineers started a St. Pat’s celebratory trend after being the first in the nation to discover he was an engineer. By 1962, nuclear engineers’ visions of a Research Reactor became a reality. Among all this history, one would be remiss to discount the founding of the Engineering Library in 1906, along with the immeasurable effect it has had on Mizzou engineering success.
According to the University of Missouri Libraries website, the libraries receive an annual budget of $18 million while supporting the instruction, research, service, and economic development missions of the University of Missouri. By acquiring scholarly resources, developing innovative services, and applying new information technologies, the MU Libraries fulfill their primary purpose: to serve the users.
However, it is necessary to inform the students and members of Mizzou’s great community that a proposal to close the Engineering Library at the University of Missouri has been established. We are concerned that the proposal would be detrimental and result in the following:
1. Reduced accessibility to resources beneficial to academic success
2. Loss of collaborative meeting space for undergraduates, graduates, faculty, staff, and the community
3. Reduced value of the College of Engineering to current and prospective students
Furthermore, the administration within the College of Engineering decided to increase the engineering fees that are included in our tuition. This has caused students to pay several hundred dollars more annually, where we were also promised these fee increases would bring better technological resources necessary for our academics. Taking away the Engineering Library would completely go against these promises to increase our resources, and in hindsight, the students would not have been in support of fee increases if we knew our library would be taken away.
The failure to preserve the Engineering Library would not only counteract the mission of the University of Missouri, but also deprive the university of its living history. By signing this document, each individual agrees to challenge the proposal of removing the College of Engineering Library at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
On behalf of the students of the College of Engineering, we thank you for your support. Please share this with fellow students and Mizzou alumni!
Sincerely,
Mizzou Engineering Student Council
