Miyas Law

Miyas Law
The Issue
Who protects the innocent? Children/Babies born into an unsafe family or care. The system fails where it is weak. Too often children are the ones who suffer. They have no voice and no options. It is up to us as a society to help step in and protect those who cannot protect themselves.
We have a system to help prevent and fight crime and protect each other as best we can. It does not always work but we do the best we can. The system often struggles with limited resources and not enough help and many gray areas and multi factor situations.
We cannot allow these faults of our system to continue to affect innocent children. We have to fight for them as much as possible. So most of us are now aware of the story of Miya Rudd. If not she was an innocent baby who’s life was cut short due to drug addicted parents.
I do not know the circumstances around her death and it doesn’t matter. The outcome for Miya was a loss that she never had a choice on. Miya’s umbilical cord tested positive for meth when she was born but her and her parents may have already left the hospital prior to that coming back. Miya’s parents, however had previously lost custody of their other children.
My proposal is this. In an effort to do all we can to protect the innocent. We should set a law, “Miyas Law”. That simply prevents parents whom have lost custody of children and have not been able to regain that custody, from keeping newly born children. There needs to be a plan in place to make sure these parents are clean, able to pass drug tests, and court ordered programs to gain custody of their children back. It’s not a law to prevent family from being together. It’s a law to protect the innocent from a very lost and unsafe parent or home.
Miya can no long be here, but we can help the future babies through her memory if be that a sad one.
