Please help Airlie Beach - Honourable Jackie Trad - Save our views

The issue

Did you know the Whitsunday Regional Council is about to increase building heights in Airlie Beach? Residents thought (mistakenly) that the Airlie Beach building height issue had been dealt with in the original round of community consultations, feedback and submissions. Now with the amended Planning Scheme still getting more than 5 times the submissions against proposed building heights as those supporting and their own telephone survey showing almost exactly 3 to 1 people against higher buildings having an adverse impact on private residences, the Council decided their latest proposal was the “perfect middle ground” and had community support.  Not so – Yet the Draft has now been sent to State Government for approval and we hope to get an answer our community wants, not what developers want.

These building height increases will change the look and feel of Airlie Beach forever. The iconic vista when you come over the hill entering Airlie Beach is already in danger of becoming the rear wall of a multi-storey building and the popular tourist view from Airlie Crescent Lookout would also be lost. The community wants to preserve the character of the town and ensure low-rise sympathetic development in keeping with the current village atmosphere. Please sign and help us take our voice to the State Government and save the essence of Airlie Beach.
