Please watch and share this video of Lionel speaking from his hospital bed today.

Thank you to everyone who signed the petition, contacted their MP, complained to the detention centre, contacted Mitie - all of that action along with the publicity, MP's interventions and the actions of his legal team at Duncan Lewis Public Law, created a situation where the Home Office decided to grant bail even before the court forced them to. We shouldn't have had to do all of this just for someone to get urgent medical care, but all of that along with what Lionel and his fellow detainees did inside the detention centre is what won.

In practice bail means he no longer has two guards with him 24/7 and can have unrestricted visits from his family and access to his phone. He is now in hospital awaiting an operation on his ankle which is broken in three places. It will be a long recovery period, 4-6 weeks in hospital and up to a year before he will walk again.

What happened to Lionel is horrific and it is not an isolated case, many more incidents like this happen and will continue to happen as long as Detention Centres continue to exist.

Though Lionel now has the medical help he needs and is free from detention, we will keep the petition live to update you and to continue the fight for Lionel's right to stay in the UK. Lionel is determined to speak out to ensure that what happened to him never happens again and that detention centres are shut down!
