McConnell and Schumer: Make it Monthly Stimulus Checks & Support the #PeoplesStimulus
The Issue
Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer: we know that things are going to get worse before they get better. Child hunger is at record levels and food banks cannot keep up with the needs of their communities. Millions are facing eviction from their homes in August and September. Families across the country have lost their jobs and health care.
People are experiencing unprecedented financial hardship during the health and economic crisis that coronavirus has created. With the rising numbers of COVID cases across the country, a return of jobs feels farther and farther away.
Congress bailed out Wall Street when the crisis struck but the people never got a bailout. Now is the time for BOLD STIMULUS LEGISLATION. In a matter of days, you will pass the next and perhaps final coronavirus stimulus bill. Lead Congress in the passage of a People's Stimulus during this time of unprecedented suffering.
Specifically, The People's Stimulus demands:
1. Reform state and city police budgets to increase investments in schools and social services. Legislation such as a strengthened version of H.R. 7120 George Floyd Justice in Policing Act can be integrated into the stimulus bill.
2. Monthly Stimulus Checks are critical for financial security through the pandemic because #OneCheckIsNotEnough. Recurring payments of $2000 a month would provide financial stability and cover basic needs for families and individuals during this economic crisis. H.R. 6553, H.R. 6496, and S. 3784 outline this ask clearly.
3. Free healthcare during the global pandemic must be provided to every man, woman, and child by expanding Medicare. Legislation such as S. 1129 Medicare for All Act of 2019 can be used as a basis for this addition.
4. Protect Small Businesses through covering payroll via The Paycheck Recovery Act, H.R. 6918 or similar legislation.
5. Suspend Rent and Mortgage Payments to prevent mass evictions. Getting evicted is a traumatizing and life-altering event that shouldn’t happen to anyone during this pandemic. Everyone deserves housing while they struggle with the health and economic implications of this pandemic. The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act, H.R. 6515 is a good resource for this.
6. Suspend all debt payments including student loans and credit card loans. If one's financial security is uncertain, paying debt collectors is the last priority when you need money to buy essentials like food. These should be suspended until the pandemic is over.
Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer: use your influence and power to support your constituents and all Americans by passing stimulus legislation that includes monthly stimulus checks and addresses the financial, health, and safety needs of the people. Support The People's Stimulus.
