Missouri Residents Seeking Enhanced Protection and Justice for Abused Pets

The Issue

I fall asleep every night listening to pet distress calls, a gut-wrenching soundscape punctuating how some animal companions suffer in our community despite thousands of reports made to local authorities. Existing laws clearly fall short in delivering justice for these helpless creatures, leading us to seek urgent modifications to pet and animal abuse laws. We propose to reassess and fortify our state's current regulations to adequately safeguard pets from harmful environments and hold their abusers liable.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, nearly 1 million animals are abused or killed each year in connection with domestic violence. This evidence illustrates how crucial it is to impose stringent legislation that will deter potential offenders and provide much-needed reprieve for these animals.

Supporting city authorities is an integral part of this process. We aim to back them in administering criminal abuse charges more effectively. To note, 70.1% of animal abuse cases recorded by the National Link Coalition in 2020 were not prosecuted, highlighting the magnitude of work that needs to be carried out in the justice system.

The purpose of this petition is not merely to create awareness or express discontent - we demand actionable changes. We call on all city officials, state representatives, and lawmakers to rally behind the cause of protecting the voiceless and helpless members of our community by amending and reinforcing the pet and animal abuse laws. For each signature, we amplify a collective plea for compassion and justice. Stand with us and sign this petition.
