MISSOURI CITY COUNCIL SILENCED US, REINSTATE OUR RIGHT TO SPEAK

MISSOURI CITY COUNCIL SILENCED US, REINSTATE OUR RIGHT TO SPEAK
The Issue
Dear fellow Missouri City Residents,
This is a petition to reinstate our right as citizens to speak to the city council at the ONLY public forum allowed to us.
For context, a few weeks ago, I brought to your attention that the city council had a June 17th meeting and had HALFED the residents right to speak on “non” agenda topics from 3 minutes down to 90 seconds. LESS THEN 2 WEEKS after city council voted to do that at the initial meeting, on July 1st , Mayor Elackatt and City council went in and REMOVED YOUR RIGHT TO SPEAK COMPLETELY on non-agenda topics!
Why does this matter?
If a topic is on the agenda for the city government to review, and “too many” residents show up to speak on the topic they care deeply about, the city council can pull the topic from the agenda. Now you will NOT be allowed to speak on it AT ALL, as it now is a “non” agenda topic.
Many of our fellow residents emailed ALL the council members imploring them to simply maintain the paltry 3 minute/person speaking time limit. Emails to city council members often go unmet or have generic canned responses. City council meetings are important for facetime with residents and to hold the city council responsible. I have had to speak on Sienna expansion and growth before, now our right to contribute to Missouri City’s growth and development has now been stripped away.
Do you want better planned development?
Don’t want an unsavory business to go in next to your home?
Want your commute to be considered and improved on Sienna Parkway as things expand?
Want more greenspace so we enjoy living here?
Missouri City council has quietly stolen your voice to make decision making easier and quicker for themselves. Please join me in respectfully asking Mayor Robin Elackatt and our city council to bring community input back to city council meetings. To start working together with residents instead of seeing us as an obstacle to silence or overcome.
We, the residents of Missouri City, care so much about protecting & growing our beautiful and diverse community. We deserve to have a voice in shaping the growth of our city and making it a better place to live.
I would also like to thank city council members Monica Riley and Jeffery Boney on behalf of Missouri City residents, they both voted to retain community input during city council meetings. We should all remember who has our back when we go to vote!
Thank you for taking the time to read this and please consider signing this petition asking the city council to restore our right to be heard. This keeps our local, elected officials accountable, and our communities engaged and excited to live here!
