Longtown-East Tupelo

The East Heights section of Tupelo was created in the 1890s as Longtown by members of the Long family and other settlers. It changed its name to East Tupelo because of its location to Tupelo. The town dissolved in 1946 and was annexed by Tupelo.

The above is a article from the Daily journal in Tupelo, MS dated May 15, 1996. This coming January 8th will mark the 80th birth date of Elvis Presley. I believe that the rightful birthplace of Elvis should be known as Longtown MS or East Tupelo. If you will notice that Elvis was born in 1935 eleven years before the town was dissolved. Elvis had a great uncle Noah Presley who even served as mayor of this town, It should also be noted that the birth house of Elvis was foreclosed by the time Elvis was 3 years of age and the family moved 8 years before the town dissolved. I have thought about starting a petition on change.org to change or have the name as Elvis' birth place to be known as Longtown/East Tupelo. I love history and I believe for the ages to come that this should be noted in some way.
