Rankin County Mississippi Skatepark
The Issue
Central Mississippi, specifically the metro Jackson area, is severely lacking in an outdoor extreme sports focused recreational area. Rankin county has wonderful team sport facilities, but has failed to capitalize and provide a space for skateboarding, bmx style biking, scootering and other individual extreme sports. Mississippi has some wonderful skateparks scattered throughout the state, but the closest to the Jackson metro area is located in Vicksburg, aside from the DiY park in Jackson. As the capital city’s largest suburban county, Rankin County is prime for an outdoor professionally designed concrete recreation area for skateboarding and other extreme sports.
This year skateboarding will take center stage at the Olympics, yet we have provided our children with no place to pursue this sport and others like it. The city of Brandon has the 200 acre Quarry project with additional phases still under development which could easily provide ample space for such a project. Flowood has built wonderful parks that could also house such a location. Pearl has the new City Park development that would also be a great location. There asre also many more potential locations throughout Rankin County.
An extreme sport recreation area in Rankin county would ultimately generate revenue for all surrounding cities, the county and small businesses by attracting visitors from all over the state. Help me garner enough signatures and support for our local city leaders and county officials to take notice and develop a plan. Whether it’s in Brandon, Flowood, Pearl or another city, Rankin county is in need!
