UPDATE THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR THE WELFARE OF HORSES (Rev 1) S7.7

UPDATE THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR THE WELFARE OF HORSES (Rev 1) S7.7
The issue
Right now we have an opportunity to help make a real difference towards updating legislation which is clear, precise and which does protect the horses.
Will you send a message to the Minister of Agriculture to update ambiguous policies of the past and to call for stronger laws to protect our horses?
Sign on to call for CHANGE to:
· The Code of Practice for the Welfare of Horses (Rev 1) S7.7 Horses must have access to proper and sufficient shelter at all times ...
· Call for clarification of current legislation, to protect the horses
Scenario – Katoomba (NSW) Industrial Area:
Two horses currently “exist” on open land, which could be less than an acre and is divided up into two separate areas, with a bog/seasonal spring running through the middle of the property. No room to run to raise body temperature!
There are a couple of very tall gum trees on the South East side of the property (which do not create any shelter from rain, snow, hail, wind or sun). There are also no hedges nor man-made shelters, for the horses to escape severe weather; no rugs for the horses either!
The weather conditions in this area range from snow, sleet, hail, heavy rain, windy conditions and often gale force winds.
This situation has been brought to the attention of the “authorities” who say that the law is too broad, and that there is nothing that they can do to enforce a shelter being provided for these poor animals. It is being argued that the tall gum trees are “sufficient shelter” – this is so wrong.
The Code of Practice for the Welfare of Horses (Rev 1) S7.7 Horses must have access to proper and sufficient shelter at all times - is far too broad, and it not protecting the horses.
Please do something to help this situation – these horses are suffering!
