Keep Algood Redskins

The Issue

Algood Middle School’s mascot, the Redskins, is a Native American depiction of a strong Warrior. It upholds and honors the many Native Americans who lived in Tennessee and were forced out. The word “redskin” is not negative or derogatory.  It packs as much bigotry and insensitivity for Native Americans as Black Lives Matter does.

Mascots and names of local schools are being changed to reflect the flavor of today. To satisfy a passing fad of erasing our past to build one of hate and destruction.

In an effort to put an end to the ridiculous, attention-getting, bandwagon of ‘let’s find offense in anything we can’, we need to step up and show that we want to keep this symbol of Native American heritage. We ask that Algood Middle School KEEP Redskins as the school’s mascot and all associated images. Keeping the Algood Elementary School’s mascot - the Braves - as well.

We humbly ask the School board, the Principals of AMS and the PTA to consider the number of people signing this petition as the silent majority and not bend to a few people who find ways to be offended every day. Thank you
