Highway Safety Improvements to Yellowhead Highway #5 between Kamloops and Valemount B.C.

The Issue

Specifically multiple traffic accidents have occurred along the Yellowhead Highway #5 from Little Fort to Blue River. Within days the straight stretch of highway near Lacarya Golf Course Highway intersection and a few miles past that still on the straight stretch at Jenkins Road crossing there have been 2 very serious accidents requiring an Air Ambulance to attend and fly the injured to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

Our own families (local to Clearwater, B.C.) lost our two beloved young husband and wife and baby, Skye, Courtney and Baby Boy Buck (who was due to be born the next month) in a tragic accident along this same stretch of highway near what is known as Wolfe's corner. If there had been no post guard rails at this crash point they would be probably be alive today. There are no post guard rails there now. There have been many many accidents along this stretch of highway on the Yellowhead over the years.

With increased traffic along this corridor in recent years, much of it heavy hauling or semi trucks year round, logging trucks - year round and increased Tourists driving an unfamiliar road with rented RV's, mixed with local traffic this highway is well past being updated to provide a safe route for all who travel on it. Some major contributors to the danger are: poor visibility, not enough no post guard rails, limited passing lanes, rural over burdened policing (police and emergency services have very long distances to cover with limited rural staffing) and speeding as well as undo care and attention on unfamiliar highway. There is one very good, but rural hospital in Clearwater that services this whole stretch of highway but cannot provide surgery on site. The closest hospital that does offer all services is in Kamloops which is 1.5 hours away from Clearwater.

No death should be 'acceptable' regardless of the circumstances in a motor vehicle accident along this busy highway in the interior! Another terrible intersection is the Wells Gray Inn intersection and this has been identified long before now as being a very hazardous crossing along the highway.

We, the undersigned here on this petition, as residents, taxpayers and compassionate citizens demand immediate attention and reassurance that the issues along this section of the Yellowhead Highway #5 will be surveyed, documented, addressed and that there is a commitment by government to devote funding to major improvements on this highway for the protection of  any and all travellers here as soon as possible to avoid further loss of life, severe injury and grief.

Please Support Us by signing this petition to gain government commitment and engagement in addressing this dangerous stretch of highway as soon as possible, to be forwarded to the Ministry of Transportation of B.C. and other government officials including local and provincial.
